MASKS PARADE

Photographs by David Donnini

Samugheo's parade originates in the pastoral agrarian culture and retains several elements of the cult of Dionysus represented by s'Urtzu that captures passion and death. Dionysian rites can also be linked to the behavior of Mamutzones jumping excited around s'Urtzu.
The main protagonists of Samugheo's parade are: Su Mamutzone, a mask with a blackened face, wearing a sleeveless goat skirt over a black dress, with a belt from which several rows of rattles are hanging ( "Campaneddas and trinitos"); S'Urtzu, the victim of the show, wears a dress of black goatskin, kid skins on his chest and a single heavy bell, like the goat who drives the herd; Admiral, the pastor, with a long black pudding and his face covered with soot, holds "sa soga" (the rope), a stick, a pumpkin containing wine and spit; Su Traga Cortgius, a character who carries dry beef skins and represents a pretext of death.
